Welcome to the Village of Highland in Highland County Ohio.
In September 1816, the village of New Lexington was laid out by a resident John Connor.
No Village in Ohio was more picturesquely located as New Lexington, upon the crest of a sloping hill that rose gently north from the banks of ever-flowing Lees Creek.
The pioneer beginnings of New Lexington date back as early as 1803. John Connor built the first house of any pretension on the southwest corner of the two main intersections. Connor uniquely platted the village so that each lot would have convenient access to an alley beside it.
When New Lexington was founded in 1816, it was not known there was another town in Ohio similarly named. Postal conflicts with New Lexington in Perry County caused the name change to Highland, after the name of the county and because of the village's fairly high elevation.
